National Science Week in Canberra includes the Australian Science Festival and open days to many science institutions. Together this is the second largest science festival in the world. Science Week in Canberra is an opportunity that’s not to be missed.

A highlight to our schools program is: Earth from Above - Get a different view on Geology as you fly over incredible landscapes and learn why they are the way they are. Presented by geologist Reid Workman of Greenmachine, the Australian Science Festival and the Australian Government as part of National Science Week.

ACTEWAGL’s Amazing World of Science
Wed, Aug 20 - Sat, Aug 23
The Australian Science Festival’s centrepiece is this interactive science exhibition. Be blown away by this display of exciting hands-on exhibits featuring science displays from research, government and industry bodies. See smart cars, touch reptiles and learn how to help save the environment. This is a fun and educational exhibition for students, teachers and the whole family. Supported by the Australian Science Festival.
Exhibition Hall, National Convention Centre. We recommend scheduling at least an hour for the exhibition. Wed - Fri: 9am to 4pm and Sat: 10am to 5pm, bookings not required, free.
This year Canberra will have public events every evening and action packed weekends with events for all ages.
The highlights to the program include: Feast or Famine - Science in the Pub™, Sun, Aug 17. This event will delve into the question of: should we cultivate Australian native foods for the table? Supported by the Australian Science Festival and the Australian Government as part of National Science Week. King O’Malley’s Irish Pub: 131 City Walk, Canberra City, 4.30pm to 6.30pm. All ages (under 18 to be accompanied by a responsible adult), bookings not required.
Science in the Shops, another highlight will be in the first three weekends of August.
1-2, 9-10, & 16-17 August 2008. While cruising through the shops on the weekend drop by our interactive exhibition. Be engaged by creepy crawlies, take in some new research in genetically modified cotton, or watch an explosion as Fizzics Education show us the power behind liquid nitrogen. At our Gross Out workshop make some fake blood or create your own scar. Science can be for everyone of any age and anyone can get involved at Science in the Shops.

Other events around Canberra
Many science institutions around Canberra have open days in science week giving the public an opportunity to see inside the working city of science – Canberra. These include Geoscience Australia, the Materials Recovery Facility, Tobin Brother’s Funeral Palour, Kingston Forensic Medical Centre, Helms Wineries, the Australian Reptile Centre, Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex, the Therapeutic Goods Administration and the John Curtin School of Medical Research.
