National Science Week 2008 in Tasmania
Get ready for a fantastic week of science in August!
National Science Week is all about raising awareness of the role of science, technology and innovation in our society - and celebrating the achievements of those who work in these areas.
Around the state, there'll be tours and talks, demonstrations and displays, science shows, school events, exhibitions and open days, something for everyone who has an interest in science, engineering and technology.
Last year, around 46,000 people took part in over 50 events around Tasmania, why not check the National Science Week event diary and find out what's on offer for 2008.
Here's a snapshot of just a few events....
Young Tassie Scientists
Talk to early career researchers who are passionate about their work and find out what inspired them to pursue a career in science and engineering. The Young Tassie Scientist’s present talks and activities based on their research as they travel around Tasmania during National Science Week.
Planet Earth: Beyond our Backyard
Explore the uniqueness of animal and plant adaptation in six global ecosystems - mountains, coastlines, caves, grasslands, deserts and rainforests. The key to all the eco-systems, water, will be featured in an engaging, interactive show at the Imaginarium Science Centre, Devonport.
A Taste of Agricultural Science
Taste local agricultural produce that has benefited from the research of agricultural scientists in Tasmania, and take part in hands-on activities relevant to the scientists research. Scientific innovations will be demonstrated through presentations from scientists and exhibits held by scientists and industry partners at the School of Agricultural Science, University of Tasmania, in Hobart.
Celebration of Science
National Science Week at the Don College will be a week of hands-on student run science activities for local primary school students. There'll be a range of competitions and challenges for local primary and high school students, as well as a community science fair with university and industry science displays and activities.
