National Science Week 2008 in Western Australia

National Science Week is an opportunity for all Western Australians to take part in a range of events and activities related to science, technology and engineering. Whether you are a teacher, employer or student, or just someone interested in science, there are so many ways to get involved. Why not showcase the science at your organisation? Or else just sit-back and enjoy what our State has to offer.

Whatever you choose, wherever you are, don’t miss out on National Science Week in WA!

Schools

For schools, take a look at the ASTA National Science Week flyer (available shortly) which provides you with information on what organizations in Western Australia are planning for National Science Week.

Present Your Own Weather Competition
ABC, the Bureau of Meteorology, ScienceNetwork WA and Scitech are running the Present Your Own Weather Competition for National Science Week (metropolitan schools only).

Your students can compete for the chance to compare their winning video to the real thing by meeting ABC TV Weather Presenter Russell Woolf and ABC TV News Presenter Karina Carvalho and watching Russell Woolf present the weather live at ABC, East Perth. They will also be in the running to win a weather station for their school or a small weather kit, a free class excursion to Scitech or four weeks free hire of the Scitech Outreach DIY Weather Kit.

National Science Week Comedy Sketch Revue
A funny thing happened on the way to the lab - a sketchy history of Science.
National Science Week Comedy Sketch Revue presented by Scitech in partnership with Spontaneous Insanity.
Celebrate National Science Week 2008 with an inventive night of sketch comedy from the team that brought you the Scitech Comedy Debate. Examining the history of science under the comedic microscope, Perth’s best comic actors and local scientists will explore the complete spectrum of science fact (and fiction) from the Big Bang to last Tuesday. It’s sure to cause a positively charged reaction of irrepressible laughter. Don’t miss it! Written by Glenn Hall and Steve Browning.

The Big West Test:
Search for the Brainiest Town in the West - a quiz night with a difference! Telecentres throughout WA concurrently hold a science quiz night. The questions are brought to each telecentre via a broadcast from Perth. Answers are tallied live online, and by the end of the night, we are able to tell which town is the brainiest town in WA.

Shopping Trolley Science:
An engaging interactive program designed to inspire the general public with science and technology and to demonstrate the cutting edge science occurring at our Western Australian universities. The program will be hosted at a regional centre from August 8-9 and at a metropolitan shopping centre from August 15-16.

Brain Break – host your own morning tea for science
A state-wide morning tea for the Western Australian science community during NSWk. Organisers are encouraged to engage their colleagues by organising an activity such as a science quiz, speakers, or a themed morning tea competition.
Complete and send the Brain Break Registration to receive a free National Science Week pack including posters, bookmarks, quiz questions, activity suggestions for your Brain Break and Brain Break coasters!
